I have the Visual Composer (by wpbakery) plugin and I’m noticing a compatibility issue with one of its features and the Specular theme. The feature that is not working is the Post Grid element, as it is not displaying the amount of pages that I specify.
WPBakery had this to say:
“The issue is because there is a Visual Composer related code present in your theme added by the theme author. You will have to get rid of it. I would advise you to do so with the help of theme author, otherwise you might loose the extra elements added by him. Once this is done, you can install the standalone plugin and it will work fine. Kindly check.”
Can anyone confirm this? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Hello,
Sorry for the late reply.
Theme does overwrites some of VC elements and has removed others. To add more, please go to file includes/core/codeless_elements.php and comment out all the elements you want to add.
Example:
//vc_remove_element("vc_btn");
-will let the button element, display in your Visual Composer elements grid.
vc_remove_element("vc_btn");
-will remove it.To check the overwritten elements files, please go to vc_templates/ folder in your theme. The post grid element is not overwritten from theme.
However, we have tested Visual Composer plugin and it does not have any incompatibility with theme scrips. If you want, you can send us your wp credentials and we can give this a closer look.
Read this article for more information.Let us know.
Best regards!

Hi Mihalia,
Thanks for the response. So what you’re saying is that Specular should not be overwriting any visual composer elements? If that’s the case, I’m not sure what else could be causing the problem. If you could take a closer look that would be awesome. Should I list the login credentials here or is there a more secure way of doing so?
Thanks so much,

Hi Mihalia,
I updated my profile to include my domain, login, and password credentials. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,

Hello,
You have a very old theme version. Please update theme to it’s latest version first. It has the latest Visual Composer included as well.
(This means it’s fully compatible with VC 5.0)Let us know.
Best regards!

Hi Mihalia,
I tried to update to the latest theme but it says the following:
“Installing Theme from uploaded file: themeforst-9412083-specular-responsive-multipurpose-business-theme.zip
Unpacking the package…
Installing the theme…
The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.
Theme install failed.”
Wordpress is updated to its latest version (4.7). Any ideas? Thanks for all your help.– Steve

Hello,
You are importing the wrong file. Please unzip the “themeforst-9412083-specular-responsive-multipurpose-business-theme.zip” file first. Inside it you will find these folders: Documentation; Licence; Slider-dummy-data; specular; specular-child;
Now zip only the ‘specular‘ folder and import this into your wordpress Appearance > Themes > Add new.
Let us know how it will go.Best regards!

Hi Mihalia,
Thank you. Do I have to delete the old Specular theme before uploading the updated theme? This is the message I am getting now:
Installing the theme from uploaded file: specular.zip
Unpacking the package…
Installing the theme…
Destination folder already exists. /home2/entdoc1/public_html/wp-content/themes/specular/
Theme install failed.
Thanks,Steve

Hello,
Yes, normally you should. As the script that installs the theme needs the folder to not be already existent.
But if you have made changes to the previous theme files and do not want to loose them, then just go to wp-content/themes/ folder and rename the current specular folder. Use a ftp connection or cpanel to reach the files.
After having renamed the old specular folder, you can install the new one without issue.Let us know if you need further help.
Best regards!

Mihalia,
I updated the theme and the plugin to the most recent versions of both and I’m still having the same problem with Visual Composer’s Post Grid element. Any more ideas? Thanks for all your help.
Best,
Steve

Hello,
Sorry for the late reply. This is strange.
I checked your page and the element does call all posts with out issue but only in pages it is restricted. This element does not have any issue on our side. Can you please add the ftp login data in your profile as well? So we can investigate this further.
Let us know.Regards and Merry Christmas!

Hi Mihalia,
That’s okay. Thank you for your help. I updated my profile to include the FTP login data (although I’m not quite sure what the FTP URL is.) Please let me know if you need any more information. Thanks again!
-
Hello,
I opened the ftp connection using your site’s url, but it opens an empty folder. Please see screenshot: https://pho.to/AZcQU
Please contact your hosting provider and ask them to help you get the right credentials (url, login data) to access the wordpress installation root folder.
Let us know.Happy Holidays!

Thanks for your response. I forwarded your message to my hosting provider and they gave me different credentials. I updated the FTP username and password in the private area of my profile. They also gave me these credentials:
host 50.87.248.127port 21
Do these help? Thank you!

Hello,
You have removed the theme i have to upload it again.
Now the website again ok. The post grid now looks ok.
We recommend to our clients to use Latest Blog Element instead Post Grid/
Let us know if you want any further help.
Regards!
-
Thanks for the response.
The post grid’s formatting looks better, but it’s still showing just one page when I have it set to show all pages.
The problem with using the Latest Blog element instead of the Post Grid is that the Latest Blog element can only show blog posts. I want to show pages. Is there another way to do this?
Thank you.

Hello,
Sorry for the late reply.
We looked into your situation but this is not a theme nor Visual Composer issue. You have the latest versions and no error in your site.
We created the same situation on our side and this does not happen for none of the cases (whither you use to show pages, or post in Post Grid).
This situation you are having is most probably a server issue.
The server configuration is limiting the number of POST variables that can be submitted to the server. We need to increase that. There are two ways this limit may be imposed:
1. PHP’s
max_input_vars
The increasingly common issue is the
max_input_vars
PHP directive. By default, it is set to 1000. To increase this, simply set it in php.ini. I’d suggest 3000 to be safe, but 2000 should be sufficient for most sites.max_input_vars = 3000
How do you edit php.ini? That depends on your host. If you have access to the php.ini file, simply add or edit the directive, save, and restart Apache. If you’re with a web host that doesn’t give you access (common with shared hosting), you may have to contact your host and have them make the change for you.2. Suhosin
Prior to PHP’s
max_input_vars
, the Suhosin PHP Security module introduced a similar pair of max_vars directives that are identical in purpose. Not all servers run Suhosin, but those that do will need to increase the following directives in php.ini:suhosin.post.max_vars = 3000 suhosin.request.max_vars = 3000
Again, you may need to contact your host to get them to make these changes if you don’t know how or can’t do it yourself.
Restart Apache with the new maximum POST variable values and try again.

My server support specialist said that he increased max_input_vars limit to 3000. However, he says he is not able to restart Apache. Does this make sense to you?
Steve Levine: did you restart apache?
Gangadhara S: No, I did not and we can not restart the server on shared account.
Steve Levine: Plugin support says that Apache needs to be restarted</span></div>
Gangadhara S: Sorry that is not possible Steve. Could be it is termed differently. Please contact them and get back to us if they need anything to be changed from server end.
Thank you in advance for any insight.
-
Hello,
Yes, it does make sense that they can not restart Apache in a shared server. This would cause inconvenience to the other sites sharing the same server.
In this case, we can recommend you to chose another Visual Composer element to create the layout you want.
Example, you could use the “Services Media” element to display as many pages as you want in home page. Set an image and the page’s link, to send the site visitors to that page.
I set an example in this page of yours: https://www.entdoctorlevine.com/pages-grid-example/Best regards!
