Hi, we’ve been having a few issues when our client is posting news stories on the Specular theme. We’ve seen some random sizes and images cropping out awkwardly but can’t seem to see why this is happening. If you look at the last 2 news stories you will see the images are completely different sizes. https://www.brighter-connections.com/category/news/
We have attempted to change the featured image with an image that is the same size and dimensions as the one used on the previous post but it still cropped it in top and bottom.
Any help would be appreciated

Hello,
The last two images in your blog page have the exact dimensions of the default value of blog featured image found in function.php file (screenshot).
Did you change it recently? What dimension are they supposed to be?
Let us know.Best regards!

Hi, thanks for responding. If you look at the first 2 news stories the latest post Link the image at the top of the page is 820 x 335 px whereas the last post the client made link is 820 x 450 px.
We’ve had to put an altered image in there for now so all the information shows as it is an event they need to promote but we have tested it using an image with the exact same dimensions the previous post. Something has changed between the new blog post and the one before but I’m not sure what.
Thanks
Joss

Hello,
If you did not made any change to the functions.php file or have installed any new plugin in time between the first and last post, than there is no reason for it to behave differently. They are resized and cropped by the same code.
Sorry but the situation is not very clear for now. The images you say (820×335 and 820×450) do they have the very same dimensions in original state? If they don’t then normally the resize will be according to the image proportions. So it won’t stretch or shrink.
Are you perhaps referring to the featured image of posts in a blog page or in single post page?
Let us know.Best regards!

Hi, sorry , let me try and explain again. The image I’m having trouble with is the featured image on an actual post (news item/blog post).
When uploading the featured image on the new post it crops the top and bottom off on the post page. It hasn’t done this previously and if you look at the post previous (lets call this “old post”) there is no cropping. We’ve tried uploading the same image we used in old post only to find it still being cropped off top and bottom. We also tried creating a brand new post using the image from “old post” only to find it being cropped again.
Hopefully that makes sense. If you want I will provide you with log on details and the image we used in “old post” and you can try creating a new post yourself

Hello,
Yes, i understand the situation now. Did you made any changes to theme in between the time when the image was showing ok and now? Do you have any image processing plugin installed?
Please do send us some valid credentials. Or just fill in the necessary information on your extra information fields of your profile data. So we can give it a closer look.Read this article for more information.
Best regards!

Hi, Just checked and the log in details are correct but I’m afraid I don’t have the FTP password.
-
Hello,
That’s ok. The wp credentials are more than sufficient. Can you please send us the images you have been testing with? Use this site to send them as files:

That seemed to be stuck on 0kb so in case that doesn’t work its 1277 × 705px
thanks

Would it be possible to change the default value of blog featured image found in function.php file to “depth 100%” Would that avoid the issue of the images cropping altogether?
I’m trying to make this really simple for our client who is uploading the news stories. She is not a designer/programmer so she just wants to be able to upload an image and it not be cropped off.

Hi, any update on this? This is literally he only site we’ve had an issue like this with. The featured image shouldn’t crop at all. I could understand it if the thumbnails on the homepage were cropped but they’re not, they’re different sizes. Very strange way to do it in my opinion
-
Hello,
I am not able to download the image you send over jumpshare. However, in file functions.php i edited this line:
add_image_size( 'blog', 825, 340, true );
to this:
add_image_size( 'blog', 825, 340, false );
This means, the function will not forcefully crop the image if they do not fit these dimensions. Please add a featured image now.
Let us know how it goes.Best regards!

Hi, this seems to have worked. All the images are now uploading correctly.
thanks

Hi, Just want to re-visit this as i’m having the same issues with strange image cropping on the blog posts featured images. I’ve visited the functions php and amended the lane as shown above but it doesn’t seem to have made any difference this time. Would you be able to look into this for me?

Hello,
What version of theme are you currently running? This is still an valuable solution to this edit. We will check it if you want. Just send us some valid wp credentials in a private reply.

Hello,
I see that the line defining the blog image size is completely missing in your functions.php file. See screenshot: https://postimg.org/image/tchxdz2k5/
Did you made any changes to it? However, i added it back, and i also added some other element’s image sizes. They are currently set as comments (not active), if you wish to make use of any in the future just uncomment the specific line. Save changes and upload images again in order for the new set up to take place.Let us now.
Best regards!

Hi, that seems to have worked although it’s now reducing the quality in the actual post see here https://www.brighter-connections.com/breakfast-briefing-business-continuity/
This is the original image https://www.brighter-connections.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/business-continuity-featured-image.jpg
Thanks

Hello,
Please add this code into your custom css box:
.blog-article.standard-style .media > *:not(.post_type) { width: auto !important; }
It will set the image at it’s original width and not stretch it out.
Let us know if you need further help.Best regards!

Hi, really appreciate the help but this hasn’t solved my issue unfortunately. The image uploaded originally is 820 × 490px but the image is now resized to 569 x 340px so is appearing very pixellated.
I removed the section of PHP altogether initially as I’m not sure what it’s adding but taking it it didn’t seem to stop it resizing the images
-
Hello,
Sorry for the late reply.
I added a test post with a custom image using media element. The image has dimensions 820 x 490px just like the dimensions set in the blog post in function.php file. As you can see yourself here: https://www.brighter-connections.com/test/
The image is still the same. If you have upload image with these dimensions, due to the “false” value in the function ‘Crop’ option, the images will not get cropped to fit the given dimensions but will keep their original aspect ratio. (read more here)
Please try adding images again. Let us know.Best regards!
